Things have grown a little somber

You may have read on the news about the January 21 protests in Tirana. Three people died and more (civilians and police officers alike) were injured. On January 28, the Socialist Party had a memorial demonstration, and we PCVs in country were put at “Standfast” where we were not supposed to travel from where we were until further notice. (This was lifted Saturday around 11am.) The demonstration was peaceful, as promised. Yet, everyone still seems so sad. At training this past week, Albanian staff all commented on how the 21st brought back memories of 1997 when there were riots after the pyramid schemes fell. It reminded me that our history is our history, and it never fully leaves us.

I hope, too, that affairs in Tunisia and Egypt are resolved quickly and peacefully. It is painful to know that people are so upset that they are pulled toward violence.
